“You can’t keep walking around in those rags and expect anyone to take you seriously, Uh-vatar,” he said with a sneer, pushing the supple clothing into her hands. “Come on. You can shower the world with your rampant water tribe pride all you want, but you don’t have to look like a time traveler doing it. I’ll pay,” he interrupted before she could protest, pushing her into the changing room.

GRACELING by Kristin Cashore

Synopsis (from BN.com):

Kristin Cashore’s best-selling, award-winning fantasy Graceling tells the story of the vulnerable yet strong Katsa, a smart, beautiful teenager who lives in a world where selected people are given a Grace, a special talent that can be anything from dancing to swimming. Katsa’s is killing. As the king’s niece, she is forced to use her extreme skills as his thug. Along the way, Katsa must learn to decipher the true nature of her Grace … and how to put it to good use. A thrilling, action-packed fantasy adventure (and steamy romance!) that will resonate deeply with adolescents trying to find their way in the world.

Review:

First off I just wanna say that I kinda hate the description from BN because it’s SO much more than that. This is such a enthralling and layered fantasy that is beyond mere adventure and a “steamy romance.” It does indeed have a grand adventure and even a romance, but it’s so smartly plotted and richly spun. It has political intrigue and a vivid fantasy world that is uniquely crafted and just… EPIC in proportions! I literally could not put it down and zipped through it in an entire night (which doesn’t happen as often as I’d like).

First off, let’s talk about the protagonist. Katsa is just such a badass character and often times when you have a badass character they can be written as aloof and obnoxious. NOT KATSA. She is just so nuanced and while there is a level of coldness to her, there’s also a layer of vulnerability that makes you see why she has to distance herself in order to do what she has to do. Which is mainly to kill/assassinate whoever her king wants dead.

Regarding the romance, I wouldn’t call it steamy. Katsa and Po’s relationship is so much subtler and deeper than that. And there is none of that “instant” connection or magnetic pull that YA romances often have. I mean, there is attraction, but it is not this abstract love at first sight that drives their romance. And I never felt like I was being force fed the romance. It came about very naturally in my opinion. Katsa and Po are friends first and foremost and I love that. They train together, fight together, sometimes fight each other (that’s how they first met actually…) I love that they don’t immediately see each other with those rose tinted eyes, but begin to actually get to KNOW one another and their love stems from that friendship.

I would definitely recommend this book and I think fans of Tamora Pierce would just eat it up. It’s fast paced and even a little sneaky! I love the little tidbits we learn about the history of this world, the mythology and it even develops a back story for the antagonist which I found totally engrossing. And if you enjoyed this book, then definitely check out it’s companion books, Fire and the recently released Bitterblue.
